A Sony corporate representative outlined the company's strategy to expand the PlayStation brand beyond traditional living room use during a recent investor Q&A session. The representative also addressed hardware pricing and principles for future platforms.

The representative stated that the PlayStation brand has historically been associated with playing in the living room. Sony is now selling peripherals, including monitors and speakers, to broaden usage scenarios. The aim is for the next-generation platform to provide value that is unique to PlayStation as opposed to serving solely as a personal computer alternative. Sony intends for the coming platform to offer an expansion of usage styles, facilitating a seamless experience outside the living room. The company currently enables users to play PS5 games remotely using Remote Play and the PlayStation Portal streaming handheld.

Regarding hardware, the representative stated that Sony views hardware as the foundation for delivering the gaming experience. The company stated that it is not feasible to absorb all component cost increases. As a result, Sony has implemented price increases outside of Japan. The corporate representative added that the company does not believe these price increases have led to a decline in customer demand, noting that PS5 sales are progressing as planned. Sony maintains a principle of not selling hardware at large losses. The representative emphasized the importance of ensuring customers understand the value provided in proportion to the pricing. Sony is currently monitoring the market and continuously evaluating its approach.
