NORTHERN IRELAND — Jeffrey Donaldson was found guilty of 18 sexual offenses, including one count of rape, against two women who were children when the crimes occurred. A jury at Newry Crown Court delivered the verdict on June 22, 2025.

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) suspended Donaldson when he was first charged in 2024. Following the verdict, the DUP announced an independent review into its handling of information regarding Donaldson.

DUP leader Gavin Robinson stated that certain former and current members of the party knew of allegations concerning Jeffrey Donaldson but did not relay this information through official channels. Robinson said, "Information about Donaldson was not reported through appropriate channels and left the party unable to formally respond."

Robinson further clarified the party's position on these revelations. "It is my job to set our standards and what we have heard over the last number of days falls well below the standards that I hold and my colleagues hold for our party," he said.

BBC Spotlight reported that five years prior, two senior DUP members received allegations against Jeffrey Donaldson from a young woman who claimed he had exploited her. Additionally, BBC Spotlight reported that two senior police officers observed Donaldson entering a sauna in London in 2006 which marketed itself as a meeting place for gay men.

Donaldson is scheduled to be sentenced in September. The conviction of a former party leader on multiple sexual offense charges, coupled with the DUP's decision to launch an independent review, indicates a period of internal scrutiny for the party. The party leadership's acknowledgment that information was not shared through appropriate channels suggests potential failures in internal reporting mechanisms, leading the DUP to examine its own processes for handling such allegations.
