The National Weather Service has issued heat alerts for approximately 145 million people across regions from the Midwest to Florida and through the Northeast and New England. Heat index values in these areas could reach between 105 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cities within the heat risk zone include Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. The heat wave is projected to peak from Thursday through Saturday in the Midwest, Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.
New York City is expected to experience temperatures as high as 95 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday, with a heat index of 106. Washington, D.C. could see a high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit later in the week, with a heat index of 108. Raleigh is also forecast for a high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit and a heat index of 107 later in the week.
Bryan Putnam, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said in a podcast interview, "That's heat that's impactful to anyone." He added, "It's not just older adults or younger children or people who are spending a ton of time outdoors, maybe straining themselves a little more than normal." Putnam also stated, "This is heat that really could impact everyone, especially with people outdoors going into the holiday weekend."
In Washington, average highs around July Fourth are approximately 89 degrees Fahrenheit, and Indianapolis averages around 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This week, both Washington and Indianapolis will be 10 to 11 degrees Fahrenheit hotter compared to their averages. Nightly lows in affected Eastern Seaboard cities may reach the 70s Fahrenheit or even high 80s, with New York City lows possibly not dropping below 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Separately, on Sunday, parts of the U.S., including Phoenix and central Texas, and much of the Southwest, recorded temperatures around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Over 130 million Americans across southern and Great Plains states were under moderate to severe heat risk conditions on Sunday. The National Weather Service advised limiting outdoor activity, staying hydrated, and securing access to air-conditioning during the extreme temperatures.
