Poland signed a contract with Saab on January 17, 2025, for the production of three A26 submarines. The agreement, valued at SEK 47 billion ($4.8 billion), is intended to modernize the Polish Navy and replace its Soviet-era Kilo-class submarines.

The contract includes a weapon package and a training-support element. Poland selected Saab's offer seven months prior to the contract signing. Final deliveries of the submarines are planned for 2038.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson commented on the agreement via X. "It is a very large and long-term deal — it will make the Polish Navy one of the strongest in all of NATO. A strong Polish submarine force strengthens security in our shared Baltic Sea and across the alliance," Kristersson said.

Saab plans to invest up to €100 million ($114 million) in Poland. This investment is projected to involve hundreds of Polish companies becoming subcontractors to Saab. Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, issued a statement regarding the contract. "We are deeply honoured that Poland has chosen Saab's submarines to bolster its defence capabilities and strengthen the strategic partnership between our two nations," Johansson said. Johansson added, "The three A26 submarines meet Poland's current and future defence requirements and will play a pivotal role in enhancing security in the Baltic Sea region."

According to Saab's promotional material, the A26 submarines are designed with an "extremely-low" acoustic signature. The manufacturer also claims the submarines are equipped with long-range precision strike torpedoes. The A26 submarines can carry submarine-launched missiles designed to engage targets at sea and on land.
