IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir conducted an intelligence, operational, strategic, and multi-scene situation assessment on June 29, 2026, marking the 1,000th day of Israel being at war. The conference began with a memorial service for IDF soldiers killed during the conflict, which included a minute of silence and a recording of Col. Asaf Hamami from October 7, 2023. Hamami served as the head of the IDF Gaza Division's Southern Brigade on that date.

During the assessment, Zamir stated that Israel is at a strategic crossroads and noted that the Gaza war has altered the concepts behind how Israel fights its wars. "For a thousand days and a thousand nights we have been fighting one of the longest, most complex and demanding campaigns we have ever known," Zamir said.

Zamir referenced the October 7, 2023, attack, stating, "The October 7 attack was an attack on the very existence of the Jewish people." He added, "The combat leadership, decision-making, leadership and heroism of the fighters at the front, under fire and at the most difficult decision-making junctures - are what led the IDF to victory in all sectors." Regarding the experience gained, he said, "There is operational and command experience here that has not existed in the IDF since its establishment."

Zamir emphasized the importance of remembrance and continued development. "Memory is not just a legacy of the past. It sharpens our responsibility every day and prepares us for the future," he said. He continued, "This memory obliges us to continue to change, move forward, derive and assimilate lessons in the regional learning race." Zamir affirmed the IDF's commitment, stating, "We are committed to our soldiers, to the security of the State of Israel and to the security of the people of Israel." He concluded by acknowledging ongoing challenges, saying, "We remember, learn and prepare for the continuation of the fighting and the many challenges that still lie ahead."

Why It Matters

This assessment marks 1,000 days since Israel began its current state of war. The event provided an opportunity for the IDF Chief of Staff to address the strategic implications and operational lessons learned from this prolonged conflict. The public statements from Lt.-Gen. Zamir indicate an organizational commitment to adapting military doctrine based on recent experiences and preparing for future challenges, while also acknowledging the human cost through a memorial service for fallen soldiers.
