NEGEV — Israel Police arrested two individuals on June 29, 2026, following the interception of a drone reportedly used to smuggle hashish across the Egypt-Israel border. Approximately 45 kilograms of the drug were seized in connection with the arrests.

The two suspects are cousins, aged 16 and 20, and are Bedouin from the Al-Azazma town in the Negev. Their arrest was part of a targeted operation by the Southern Border Patrol Unit and its undercover unit against smuggling gangs utilizing drones.

Police and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intelligence identified a drone suspected of making multiple crossings between Israel and Egypt. This drone was observed landing in Israeli territory. Authorities then identified alleged members of the gang operating the drone.

Police observed the suspects removing items from a vehicle. Following this, the vehicle was seized, and its contents were confirmed to be approximately 45 kilograms of hashish. The two suspects fled on foot after the seizure but were apprehended shortly thereafter.

A search of the suspects' vehicle revealed a drone, remote controls, and mobile phones. Materials found indicated that the seized drone allegedly completed several flights over the border on the day of the incident. The suspects were subsequently transferred to the Israel Police’s Southern District Police Headquarters for questioning.

An indictment is anticipated against the suspects on charges of smuggling approximately 45 kilograms of drugs through the Egyptian border using a drone. They are expected to face charges including importing a dangerous drug and endangering human life. Additionally, the suspects are expected to be charged under the new offense of violating the state's sovereignty at the borders.

The offense of violating the state's sovereignty at the borders has not previously been used in a case within the Southern District. This offense carries a potential penalty of up to nine years in prison.
