ALASKA — A grand jury in Bethel, Alaska, indicted Ulric Ulroan, 48, on 47 criminal counts, including sexual assault in the first degree, following an investigation into alleged abuse. Investigators arrested Ulroan four days after the indictment, and he was remanded to the custody of the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center. Bail was set at $250,000.

The charges against Ulroan include first-degree sexual assault, first-degree sexual abuse, second-degree sexual abuse, second-degree indecent exposure, and furnishing alcohol to a person under the age of 21. Some charges allege Ulroan was in a position of authority over the victims when the crimes occurred. State Troopers Investigator Brian Wassmann stated the indictment involves at least six victims. State troopers believe there could be additional victims who have not been identified. Ulroan was living in Nome, Alaska, at the time of his arrest.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation received a tip in January regarding alleged sexual abuse by Ulroan. The initial tip alleged Ulroan sexually abused a 17-year-old girl in Chevak between 2009 and 2010. The investigation identified additional reports of Ulroan sexually assaulting or abusing teenage girls between 2009 and 2025 in Chevak, Anchorage, Mountain Village, and Nome, Alaska.

Ulroan served as mayor of Chevak, which has a population of fewer than 1,000 residents, and on its governing council. He also coached high school girls basketball, worked as a schoolteacher, and was a certified foster parent from 2005 to 2023. Additionally, he worked as a pilot for Bering Air in Nome. In 2019, Ulroan and his wife, Mary Ulroan, were named parents of the year by the Alaska Federation of Natives.

Mary Ulroan issued a statement regarding her husband's arrest. "My first priority is the safety and wellbeing of all people affected and the privacy of my own children as they navigate this difficult situation," she said. "I respectfully ask for compassion and privacy for our family, especially my children." The couple has six children and three grandchildren.
