BELFAST — Mob violence occurred in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in June 2026, including arson and the intimidation of ethnic minorities. The unrest followed the stabbing of Stephen Ogilvie, 44, on June 8, 2026, an event that was captured on video and circulated on social media platforms.

After the stabbing, a 30-year-old Sudanese man, who was seeking asylum in the U.K., was charged with Ogilvie's attempted murder. Ogilvie survived the attack but sustained serious injuries. Protests on June 9, 2026, involved masked groups setting fire to vehicles and homes in ethnic minority neighborhoods, resulting in residents being driven from their homes.

Reporting from Wired suggested that active clubs might have orchestrated or instigated the Belfast attacks, based on analysis of social media activity. Active clubs are described as a global network of fascist, white nationalist youth groups that incorporate mixed martial arts into their activities.

The Ulster Youth Club, a neo-fascist group in Northern Ireland, used its Telegram account to disseminate material that appeared to incite such actions. The account shared a post from another U.K.-based Telegram account, which urged white men to take action against non-white individuals, instructing them to "Make them terrified they are trapped on an island with you." On the morning after Ogilvie's stabbing, the Ulster Youth Club Telegram account posted advice for street protesters. This advice included instructions not to bring smartphones or smartwatches, to wear hats and gloves, and to cover up tattoos.

Michael Colborne, a journalist and researcher, stated that the incident allowed these groups to see their model in action. "Effectively, they saw their model in action," Colborne said. He added, "They saw masked young men committing political violence and in a model that they … would actually further like to emulate themselves." Colborne also commented on the purpose these groups have for training in combat sports. "The whole point of participating in combat sports for them isn't like it is for most other people who might want to just go get fit, taking a kickboxing class or learning self-defense or bettering themselves," he said. "Their interest in combat sports is explicitly about preparing for political violence."

After the unrest, a Substack account associated with the active club movement published a post-mortem review of the rioters' operational security tactics. This post commended participants who had performed phone searches of videographers. The Ulster Youth Club Telegram account had also stated in its preparations for street action that "'Citizen journalists' explicitly not welcome." Far-right figures in the U.K. and U.S. have used alleged crimes against white U.K. residents to promote messages advocating for the mass expulsion of non-white individuals. Elon Musk has used social media to address demographic changes in the U.K. and other countries.
