SAN JOSE — One person died and another sustained life-threatening injuries in a shooting at San Pedro Square in San Jose, California, on June 28, 2026. San Jose Police initiated a homicide investigation following the incident.

San Jose Police made an announcement regarding the homicide investigation on the social media platform X shortly after 10 p.m. local time. The shooting took place in the vicinity of N Market St. and W Santa Clara St., near San Pedro Square.

"One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries," San Jose Police stated. The agency also confirmed: "This incident is being investigated as a homicide. Several surrounding streets are closed in the area."

A security guard at the scene described one of the victims, saying, "The person was still moaning and groaning. There was blood around his neck and upper back." Uniformed personnel were observed carrying a person on a stretcher, partially covered by a white sheet, away from the location. The security guard also noted that "Police were talking to security and a couple of witnesses."

Following the incident, most bars in the area were closed. No World Cup games were being screened at the time of the shooting. The only World Cup match scheduled for that day concluded around 2 p.m. local time.

San Pedro Square is a known location for hosting World Cup watch parties in the San Francisco Bay Area, which has hosted five World Cup matches. The latest World Cup game in the Bay Area prior to the shooting was a knockout match on Wednesday, June 24, between Bosnia and the United States. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics, approximately 44,000 individuals died from gun-related injuries in the U.S. in 2024.
