The University of Michigan conducted an investigation into Acker, confirming the comments. He stated, "For those who have been hurt, disappointed, frustrated, or angry, I understand why. I do not ask for sympathy. I do not ask anyone to excuse my mistakes. I only ask that my apology be heard as sincere."

Reporting in April 2026 indicated that Acker sent messages in a group chat containing sexual comments about a female University of Michigan student and a Democratic party strategist. The reports included screenshots of these messages from the messaging service Slack.

Acker acknowledged what had been reported about him, stating, "Much has been said and written about me. Some of it I believe has been unfair, some of it has felt like a deliberate attempt to define me by my worst moments and mistakes, but today is not about that. Today is about accountability."

Before the university's investigation confirmed the comments, a lawyer for Acker initially denied that he had used the messaging service Slack. Acker has served on the University of Michigan Board of Regents since 2019 and is a member of the Democratic Party. He lost a re-election bid for the Board of Regents in 2026 and has six months remaining in his current term as regent.
