A European client has incorporated a "climate change factor" into its data center specifications to design facilities capable of accommodating future temperature rises. This development reflects growing industry concerns regarding climate-related risks, as 79% of global data center capacity faces elevated risks from acute climate hazards such as flooding, extreme winds, and wildfires, according to a study by First Street.

Cooling systems account for approximately 40% of data centers' energy consumption under normal operating temperatures. Mishal Thadani, CEO and co-founder of a relevant firm, stated, "Data centers need the most energy exactly when the grid has the least available to give." Thadani also said, "Data center load can be curtailed during the worst hours, but most planning models still don't account for how much more often extreme heat is coming."

In May, the financial hub of Turin, Italy, experienced temperatures around 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). This heatwave caused underground cables to undergo thermal stress, leading to repeated blackouts in the city. Microsoft designs its data centers for reliable operation across diverse environmental conditions, utilizing site selection, redundant systems, and real-time monitoring to manage risks from extreme heat and severe weather.

Technological advancements are also addressing these challenges. Nvidia said its new AI servers can run their cooling liquid at 45 degrees Celsius. According to Nvidia, raising chiller temperatures by one degree can cut cooling energy costs by about 4%. Additionally, Johnson Controls tests data-center cooling equipment to ensure it can withstand various temperatures.
