HARROW — The Metropolitan Police confirmed an investigation into a religiously aggravated hate crime after a man reportedly directed antisemitic abuse at an Orthodox Jewish woman in a Waitrose supermarket in Harrow, London. The incident led to a police report and a temporary arrest.

A witness claimed a man in the checkout line of the Waitrose store verbally abused the woman. The witness told The Jewish Chronicle that the man shouted phrases including offensive language referring to Jewish people and calls to harm "Zionist Jews." The witness also reported confronting the man, who then directed abuse at both the woman and the witness.

The Metropolitan Police Service received an online report regarding the incident, which occurred at a shop on High Road, Harrow. Officers are working to identify the victim to continue their inquiries into the event. A spokesperson for Waitrose confirmed the company would cooperate with the police investigation, including sharing retained CCTV footage.

An off-duty officer reportedly entered the same shop on a Friday and became aware of a disagreement between staff and a man believed to be connected to the earlier incident. The Metropolitan Police arrested this man to confirm his identity and prevent his disappearance, after which he was released.

A spokesperson for Waitrose told Jewish News that their branch management team initially did not receive full details of the incident. The spokesperson apologized for the initial delay in reporting it and stated, "We are very sorry our customer experienced such a distressing incident in our shop."

The Metropolitan Police stated that they acknowledge ongoing concerns within Jewish communities. The force maintains an enhanced policing plan that focuses resources on vulnerable areas to protect communities, disrupt offenders, and address crime.
