NORTH CAROLINA — Senator Thom Tillis appeared on CNN's "Face the Nation" on Sunday, where he discussed efforts related to election confidence and the SAVE America Act. Tillis objected to a version of the SAVE America Act proposed by former President Donald Trump.

Tillis questioned actions that could undermine trust in elections. "Why are we doing more things to undermine our confidence in elections, rather than getting the strong message out that will win for Republicans this year?" he said. He added that Republicans should focus on their accomplishments. "Win by the good results that Republicans have produced and stop undermining the confidence in the elections," Tillis said.

Tillis co-sponsored the original SAVE America Act. That version of the bill would require voters to present a photo ID at the ballot box and would effectively end widespread mail-in voting. Trump has indicated that the SAVE America Act is his top priority before the midterms, but Republican leaders in Congress have stated it lacks sufficient votes to pass. Many Democrats oppose the SAVE America Act, arguing it could lead to the disenfranchisement of numerous voters.

Trump's version of the SAVE America Act includes a provision that would bar transgender athletes from women's sports. Tillis expressed a desire for Republicans to concentrate on policy issues. "Let's try and figure out a way to completely and finally end these distractions so that we can focus on the damage Democrats could do if they take the House, if they beat incumbent Republicans in the Senate," he said. He concluded that these are the topics Republicans should be addressing: "That's what Republicans need to be talking about between now and November."
