LOS ANGELES — The seven-episode sketch comedy series "Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America" premiered on June 26, 2026. Executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama through Higher Ground Productions, the series features Larry David as co-creator and star.

Jeff Schaffer serves as the series' co-creator and director. The show had a red carpet premiere at the Hollywood Legion Theater in Los Angeles on June 23, 2026, ahead of its streaming debut. Each episode comprises four sketches, and Barack Obama appears in the series.

Schaffer stated that Obama provided notes on the series. "I spent half an hour talking about how funny everything is. I give you one note, and you get into a defensive crouch," Schaffer said Obama stated. Schaffer added that David responded to these notes by saying, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got it." Schaffer also reported that Obama said, "When I was in the Oval Office, I took advice and listened to my advisers, and I was the president of the United States," to which David replied, "Yeah, but I'm the president of this."

In a trailer for the series, Obama stated, "I've sat across the table from some of the world's most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of the globe's most intractable problems." He added, "Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David." Obama also said, "I'm just a producer on the show," and concluded, "So I don't have to deal with him day-to-day but still, it's a lot."

Larry David confirmed that he and Obama frequently golf together. Cazzie David, Larry David's daughter, posted a photo of them on Instagram with the caption, "He's making us tour every Civil War battlefield." This Instagram post has since been deleted. Higher Ground Productions was established in 2018.

The series cast includes Jerry Seinfeld, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, Vince Vaughn, Kathryn Hahn, Bill Hader, Jane Krakowski, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Chris Parnell and Alan Tudyk appear in the first episode, while Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes appear in the second. David portrays historical figures such as Alexander Graham Bell, Joe McCarthy, and Meriwether Lewis in various sketches. The series also features sketches about historical events including the Boston Tea Party, the Declaration of Independence, Rosa Parks, the Alamo, trench warfare during World War I, the Underground Railroad, and the Wright Brothers. The series finale is scheduled for release on August 7, 2026.
