NEW YORK CITY — Following the Democratic primary victories of Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Claire Valdez in New York City on June 23, 2026, several right-wing media figures and political leaders issued statements characterizing the winners and their supporters as anti-American, communist, and foreign.
Lander defeated incumbent Representative Dan Goldman in the 10th Congressional District Democratic primary. Chevalier defeated Representative Adriano Espaillat in the 13th Congressional District Democratic primary, and Valdez won the Democratic primary in the 7th Congressional District. All three candidates received endorsements from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Two sitting Democratic members of Congress lost renomination during this primary cycle.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman labeled Lander a Nazi on Newsmax. Blakeman said, "He's a disgrace. He's anti-American, he is anti-Semitic, even though he's Jewish. This guy would be a camp guard in a concentration camp if he could." Media commentator Ben Shapiro claimed in a podcast interview that Lander "calls himself a Jew so that he doesn't have to call himself a white guy."
Television host Jesse Watters described New York's primary results as "a third world takeover" on a cable news program. Watters said, "This is what happens when you import the third world." Television host Laura Ingraham also commented on a cable news program, stating, "The entire lead-up to July 4, I consider it one big trigger warning to the Mamdani minions. They're happiest when foreign flags are flying. Because to them, red, white, and blue . . . is like sunshine to a vampire."
President Donald Trump made related remarks on Truth Social, stating he had been preparing for the return of communists "for a long time." During a speech in Washington, Trump framed the upcoming midterm elections as a contest between Republicans and "communists." He also warned that apartment buildings would become "ghettos and slums" because landlords were effectively having their property confiscated, referring to Mayor Mamdani's rent freeze proposal. Podcast host Steve Bannon called New York a "foreign city" in a podcast interview, adding that Mamdani's base is "foreign" and that "Go look at Mamdani's base. It's foreign. These sanctuary cities — this is all by design."
Chevalier had previously referred to the United States as a "f**king disgrace" in social media posts from the early 2020s. In other posts from the same period, Chevalier called Joe Biden a "war criminal" and discussed using an American flag as a napkin.
