COLUMBUS — A federal judge has issued new restrictions on the supervised release of Tres Genco, 24, including a requirement that he reside more than two miles from The Ohio State University's main campus. These conditions resulted from an agreement between Genco and the U.S. Department of Justice, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

Genco must obtain new housing that complies with the residency restriction and complete a move within 30 days. He is also required to receive preapproval from his probation officer for the location of his new residence and any subsequent changes. Pending the acquisition of compliant residency, Genco will be monitored using location-monitoring technology, including GPS, at the probation officer's discretion.

In addition to the residency rule, Genco must seek and receive preapproval before entering any college or university campus within Ohio. The Department of Justice filed a motion in May asking the court to require Genco to live more than two miles away from any Ohio college or university.

Genco was released from prison on April 30 and moved to a residence within two blocks of OSU's campus on May 14.

Genco pleaded guilty to an attempted hate crime charge in October 2022. He admitted at that time that he wanted to conduct a mass shooting of women at The Ohio State University. He was sentenced to 80 months in prison on Feb. 29, 2024.

Prosecutors previously stated that Genco wrote a manifesto in which he claimed he would "slaughter" women "out of hatred, jealousy, and revenge." Court documents indicate that Genco searched for two sororities online, including one at OSU, on the day the manifesto was written. Genco conducted surveillance near OSU in 2021.

Sheriff's deputies responded to Genco's home in Highland County on March 12, 2020. At his home, deputies discovered a firearm equipped with a bump stock, several loaded magazines, body armor, and ammunition. A semi-automatic pistol was also found hidden in a heating vent. Authorities stated Genco had plotted to kill as many as 3,000 people before he was taken into custody.
