YANGON — Myanmar authorities burned more than 50 tons of seized illegal drugs nationwide on June 26, 2026. The destruction events marked the U.N. International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The destroyed drugs included heroin, opium, ketamine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and crystal meth. The estimated street value of the illegal drugs totaled approximately $600 million. Drug destruction events occurred in multiple cities, including Yangon, Mandalay, and Taunggyi.

In Yangon, authorities destroyed 31 different types of drugs. The street value of the drugs destroyed in Yangon was approximately $321 million. Police Lt. Col. Aung Myat Soe from the Yangon Anti-Narcotics Police Force stated that the street value of drugs destroyed in 2026 was more than double the total value of drugs destroyed in 2025. "This year, the street value of drugs destroyed was more than double last year's total," Aung Myat Soe said.

Myanmar has been identified as a major source of illegal drugs for East and Southeast Asia, and is one of the world's largest producers of heroin and methamphetamine. In January 2026, the military government claimed its largest-ever seizures of illicit drugs and drug-manufacturing equipment. These January seizures were taken from 12 drug production sites during raids in the northern part of Shan state.

Violent political unrest in Myanmar followed the 2021 military takeover. This led to a civil war between the military government, pro-democracy opponents, and ethnic armed groups. Experts state this civil war has caused an increase in drug production. The military government claims that militias use illicit drugs to fund their insurgencies.

The Ta'ang National Liberation Army captured areas of northern Shan state during the civil war. This group signed a ceasefire with the military in October 2025. Elections concluded in Myanmar earlier in 2026, where military leaders won a landslide victory. International observers stated these elections were neither free nor fair, and that major opposition groups had been banned.
