MIAMI — President Donald Trump criticized NATO for not supporting U.S. military actions against Iran during a Saudi-sponsored economic forum in Miami on March 27. Trump said negotiations with Tehran were progressing to end the current conflict.

"NATO made a terrible mistake when they wouldn't send a small amount of military armament, when they wouldn't just even acknowledge what we were doing for the world and taking on Iran," Trump said. "They just weren't there."

"Why would we be there for them if they're not there for us? They weren't there for us," he said. "We spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year on NATO, hundreds, protecting them, and we would have always been there for them, but now, based on their actions, I guess we don't have to be, do we?"

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff provided details about the diplomatic efforts at the same forum. "There will be meetings this week between Washington and Tehran," Witkoff said.

"We have a 15-point deal on the table that the Iranians have had for a bit of time. We expect an answer from them, and it would solve it all," he said.

Senior Iranian officials denied that Tehran is in negotiations with Washington. On March 25, Iran said it was reviewing a 15-point US proposal and put forward five conditions that needed to be met for the conflict to end.

On March 27, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States had not yet received a response from Iran and suggested that contacts had been indirect. Rubio said the United States expects to wrap up its military operation in Iran within weeks, not months, and believes it is possible to achieve its goals without ground forces.

Ten to twelve US troops were wounded, including two seriously, in an Iranian strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. On March 27, the US military said that 273 of the injured service members had returned to duty.

The United States contributed about 15.9 percent of NATO's 2025 military budget, or $842 million. NATO's military budget in 2025 was about $5.3 billion.
