COSTA RICA — AstraZeneca made its breast cancer therapies, Enhertu and Truqap, available in Costa Rica on June 23, 2026. The medications target specific types of breast cancer.

Enhertu, known generically as trastuzumab deruxtecan, is intended for tumors that express the HER2 protein. The DESTINY-Breast06 study indicated favorable results for Enhertu when compared to chemotherapy in patients with metastatic, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer that is HER2-low or HER2-ultra-low.

Truqap, or capivasertib, is indicated for patients diagnosed with advanced or metastatic hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. This drug functions by blocking the AKT protein, which is linked to mechanisms promoting the growth and survival of tumor cells.

Andrés Rojas, Medical Director for Central America and the Caribbean at AstraZeneca, stated that both therapies allow for a personalized approach to treatment. He said that treatment can be tailored to the specific characteristics of the tumor. Rojas also said that the company continues to work on transforming patient outcomes through scientific research and the development of innovative therapies.

Worldwide, more than 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year. In Costa Rica, over 1,300 new cases of breast cancer are recorded annually, and more than 420 deaths from the disease occur each year.
