BOYLE HEIGHTS — A fire erupted at a 500,000-square-foot cold storage warehouse in Boyle Heights on June 17, 2026, involving dozens of solar panels on the roof. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety opened an investigation into alleged unpermitted construction at the warehouse on the same day. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom both declared a state of emergency in the neighborhood on June 21, 2026. The fire was extinguished on June 25, 2026.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is inspecting Lineage and Pearce in connection with the incident. Lineage stated it believes the June 2026 fire started on the roof while Altus Power was conducting tests. A Lineage spokesperson said Altus Power owns the solar array and is responsible for its design, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair. Altus Power released a statement saying the cause of the June 2026 fire has "yet to be determined." Altus Power spokesperson Jenny Volanakis stated, "Due to the ongoing nature of this matter, including potential litigation, we are unable to comment on it at this time."

A prior fire occurred on the same warehouse roof in August 2024 and was extinguished by firefighters. Lineage chief financial officer Robert Crisci stated in a November 2024 earnings call that the August 2024 fire cost the company around $6 million. City records indicate no permits were issued to Lineage or other companies for repairs to the roof following the August 2024 fire, and no building inspections of the roof appear in city records from 2024 onwards. A permit was issued to the building owner to add the rooftop solar system in July 2020.

Lineage stated dangerous chemicals such as ammonia, used in the site's refrigeration systems, were transported away from the site as a precaution. The Environmental Protection Agency and local air authorities said they have not detected anything beyond what is typically expected after a fire. Fire officials said on June 24, 2026, that smoke conditions had improved. Mayor Bass said her office and Councilmember Gerardo's office are distributing masks and air purifiers throughout the neighborhood. "We are making sure that people can protect themselves at home as they go about their day or have a safe place to go," Bass said.
