BRUSSELS — Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev conducted an official visit to Brussels, where Kazakhstan secured approximately 10 billion euro in commercial deals. During the visit, Tokayev met with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

New agreements included an air transport accord between the EU and Kazakhstan. Air Astana placed an order for up to 50 aircraft from Airbus, a deal valued at 7.1 billion euro. The European Investment Bank signed a 150 million euro agreement to support transport connectivity with Kazakhstan. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed a memorandum of understanding concerning the establishment of an internationally accredited national chemical-analytical laboratory in Kazakhstan.

The joint statement from the visit reaffirmed a shared commitment to peace, security, stability, and the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. The statement did not directly mention the conflicts in Ukraine or Iran. Both parties emphasized the importance of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor.

Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X that "Kazakhstan and Central Asia as a whole, is a natural global gateway." The EU serves as the destination for 37 percent of all Kazakh exports, primarily oil and uranium. Last year, the EU and Kazakhstan marked a decade since the signing of their Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA).

Prior to his visit to Brussels, Tokayev published an article with Euronews. He stated in the article that his strategic goals included "strengthening resilience, expanding connectivity of all kinds, and creating new opportunities for citizens." He also wrote, "Geography and power are making a comeback." In February, Tokayev published an op-ed in The National Interest, pledging Kazakhstan as a "reliable" partner for the United States. Before a February visit to Washington, Tokayev made a trip to Pakistan.
