Singer-songwriter SZA posted on her Instagram Story that a search for her name revealed AI models had been trained on 238 of her songs. On her private Instagram account, notmusicatalliswear, she alleged that producer Diplo has equity in Suno, an AI music company.
In posts on the private account, SZA alleged Diplo was attempting to train Suno with content from "the best and brightest black minds of writers and producers." She expressed strong disapproval of musicians who support such practices, writing, "If your a musician and you support this degenerate shit? Your disgusting and there's NOTHING YOU COULD EVER SAY TO ME TO MAKE THIS OKAY. I hope u have the life u deserve." SZA emphasized the disproportionate cultural influence of Black Americans relative to their population size, stating, "We make up 13% of the American population yet influence the world w our sound and perspective. I AINT HEARD A WHITE AI SONG YET…We have no protection in legislature medical or creative. The easiest to steal from. DO NOT GIVE AWAY YOUR VIBRANIUM !!! DO NOT TRAIN AI W YOUR GENIUS."
Suno chief product officer Jack Brody addressed concerns in a LinkedIn post, stating that Suno's training metadata does not include artists' names and that the company cannot replicate material it was trained on. Brody noted Suno was working to improve impersonation detection capabilities. The company has argued in a legal response that its use of copyrighted music for model training is permissible under fair-use doctrine.
Producer Diplo made statements earlier this year about AI in music, saying in an April interview that "there's no fighting AI" and that he no longer required human voices for his tracks, able to secure "the best voice from AI." He also posted on X, formerly Twitter, that artists need to "adapt or just like give up and become an uber driver until everyone has a waymo." In a separate comment, he stated, "The customer and accessibility is what's always going to be triumphant. You're never going to be like, 'I'm going to choose the artistry and the hard work'. You can talk that all you want, and some people will love that, but 99% of people are going to wanna love the best product made the quickest, made the cheapest – that's what the American economy is." Diplo further expressed that he was not going to "candy coat the future," but believed a human mind and touch would always be necessary, as AI would not share the afflictions of creative individuals.
Suno CEO Mikey Shulman said that "some of the best artists, producers, songwriters and people from across the music industry" contributed to the company's $400 million investment round. Suno is currently testing a model backed by Warner Music Group. Last year, SZA criticized the normalized use of AI programs like ChatGPT and Grok, stating, "Al doesn't give a fuck if you live or die I promise," and claiming these programs contribute to pollution and excessive water usage in underserved communities.
