SAN FRANCISCO — Notion announced it will shut down the Notion Mail inbox across web, desktop, and iOS on September 22, 2025. The company launched Notion Mail as a Gmail client in April 2025.

The Notion Mail service was primarily built by people who joined Notion through the Skiff acquisition in February 2024. Skiff's email service was shut down within a year of the acquisition. Skiff had previously served 2 million users. Notion Mail was built using Skiff's infrastructure. Notion Mail did not support end-to-end encryption.

Notion stated its decision was based on increasing use of AI agents for email workflows. "We launched Notion Mail with a belief that your inbox should think like you—more personal to how you work and over time, more capable with AI," Notion said. The company added, "Today, more than half of Notion Mail users manage emails without ever opening their inbox." Notion said, "As Notion agents have gotten more capable, we've seen more users hand off email workflows to them." The company stated, "So, we're going all in on using agents to run your inbox."

The company confirmed that email-based agents will continue operating after the Notion Mail shutdown. Notion indicated that existing auto-label rules can be transferred to a Custom Agent. Users can export snippets and auto-label instructions from Notion Mail to use elsewhere. Notion urged users to export drafts and scheduled emails by September 21, 2025, as those items will not automatically carry over. User email history will remain in Gmail after the shutdown. Organizations relying on HIPAA coverage must transition off Notion Mail by June 30, 2026.
