NEW YORK CITY — Luigi Mangione appeared in a New York City court on Feb. 21, 2025, facing murder and terrorism charges in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. Supporters of Mangione gathered outside Manhattan Criminal Court on the same day to protest the U.S. healthcare system.

The New Jersey Regional Operations and Intelligence Center issued a bulletin warning that the class divide in the U.S. could drive lone-wolf attacks on corporate executives. The bulletin cited Thompson's killing as an expression of "anti-fat-cat rhetoric" and stated that disaffected Americans were increasingly blaming societal problems on rich individuals and corporate executives. "Public discourse increasingly attributes the challenges faced by the middle and lower classes to the actions and influence of wealthy corporate executives," the bulletin stated.

Separately, the "Quarterly Executive Threat Watch" bulletin warned corporate security personnel about a heightened threat environment following Thompson's death. The bulletin advised security personnel to vary the daily routines of executives, limit information on public engagements, and remove bosses' personal information from the web. It also advised bosses to "remain vigilant of lone offenders with personal grievances." The bulletin added, "Online glorification of the murder of Brian Thompson and calls for violence are still apparent and further create a risk for a lone offender attack." A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer disseminated this bulletin to recipients across the country.

Michael German, a former FBI agent specializing in domestic terrorism and a critic of fusion centers, commented on these reports. German said, "The report seems to be putting forth the view that that is an extremist viewpoint, rather than something that the state has some responsibility in correcting." He also stated, "All the resources of the national network of fusion centers, which includes federal resources along with state and local resources, are devoted toward providing security information to private entities." Mangione's legal team declined to comment on the fusion center report.
