HOUSTON — Housing Alliance HTX reopened waitlists for eight public housing properties on June 22, 2026, receiving more than 6,000 applications within the first 24 hours. The application period is scheduled to close on July 6, 2026.

The eight properties are Kelly Village, Lincoln Park, Long Drive, Oxford Place, Bellerive, Lyerly, Independence Heights, and Irvington Village. Applicants may apply to a maximum of three properties. After the period concludes, applicants will be selected through a random lottery, with results announced in late July 2026.

Bellerive and Lyerly are designated senior living communities for individuals aged 62 and older. Unit availability varies by property, and rent is determined by household income and the number of household members.

Daveta Thomas, pre-admission and occupancy manager for Housing Alliance HTX, stated, "I never thought I'd have to open it again this soon after 2023." She added that the decision was due to changes in residents' incomes and moves to other programs. "But as people's incomes have changed and have moved to different programs or more conventional housing, we've had that need to open," Thomas said.

Applications can be submitted online via the Housing Alliance HTX application portal or by phone at 713-260-0500. Individuals already on existing public housing waitlists do not need to take further action. The Housing Choice Voucher waitlist remains closed, but individuals on that list are eligible to join the public housing waitlist.

Latasha Richar, an applicant, said, "Just by being on the waitlist, I'm feeling very hopeful...feeling very hopeful." Richar also described the program as a "blessing" that arrived at a needed time. Housing Alliance HTX rebranded from the Houston Housing Authority earlier in 2026. Data from the Kinder Institute indicates that more than 160,000 families in Houston are experiencing poverty.
