New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrated with Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier at an election night watch party on June 23, 2026. Three House candidates endorsed by Mamdani won their primary elections in New York.

Two of the three candidates Mamdani supported are members of the Democratic Socialists of America. Claire Valdez, a state Assembly Member, defeated Antonio Reynoso in the primary for New York's 7th Congressional District. Reynoso had received backing from outgoing Representative Nydia Velázquez. In the 10th Congressional District, Brad Lander, formerly the City Comptroller, defeated Representative Dan Goldman. Darializa Avila Chevalier, a former Columbia University pro-Palestine student organizer, won her primary election against Representative Adriano Espaillat. Espaillat serves as the chair of the Democratic Party's Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Mike Marinella, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee, commented on the election results. Marinella said that "Three losses in one night is tough." He also stated, "We wanted so-called 'Leader' Jeffries to know our thoughts are with him, his candidates, and whatever remains of his influence in the Democrat Party."

Corbin Trent, who previously worked as an aide for Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, discussed the divisiveness surrounding democratic socialists. Trent said that "These ideas that [democratic socialists are] lifting up again are very divisive, but I think we're misinterpreting who they're divisive with." He added, "They're divisive with people that are going to D.C. dinners, they're divisive to people at fundraisers, they're divisive to people in Beltway, and they're certainly divisive among the big donor class."

Democratic Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania appeared on a television interview on Tuesday night. He used the appearance to denounce the pro-Palestine focus of the Democratic Socialists of America candidates who won in New York.
