WASHINGTON COUNTY — Brian Albert secured the Republican nomination for Washington County Sheriff on June 23, 2026, receiving 6,642 votes, or 68.55% of the total. He is expected to face Democratic nominee Junior P. McLeod in the Nov. 3 general election. McLeod, who ran uncontested in the Democratic primary, secured 5,816 votes.

Chuckie Johnson, Albert's opponent in the Republican primary, received 3,047 votes, accounting for 31.45% of the vote. Albert is seeking his second four-year term as sheriff, having succeeded Doug Mullendore in 2022.

In a phone interview, Albert stated that he appreciated the voters giving him a chance to represent them for another four years. He commended Johnson and his campaign, saying they were "running a very good, clean campaign" where both focused on the facts and what they had to offer.

Johnson commented on the outcome of the primary on his campaign's Facebook page. He said, "While the election did not end the way we had hoped, I am incredibly proud of the campaign we ran, the ideas we shared, and the people who stood beside us throughout this journey."

Election officials indicated that an estimated 1,400 to 1,500 mail-in ballots had been received by the Washington County Board of Elections but had not yet been counted as of the initial results. Mail-in ballots postmarked by June 23 and received by 10 a.m. on July 6 will be counted. In a separate primary race, Thomas A. Freeman received 2,993 votes, or 7.59%, in the male candidate category of the Washington County Democratic Central Committee primary. The four men and four women with the most votes in this primary will secure seats on the committee.
