WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump voted by mail from Washington, D.C., in Florida's House District 87 special election on March 22, 2026. The president spent the weekend of March 20 through March 22 at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach during the early voting period.

"You know what, because I'm president of the United States, and because of the fact that I'm president of the United States, I did a mail-in ballot for elections that took place in Florida. I decided that I was going to vote by mail-in ballot because I couldn't be there, because I had a lot of different things," Trump said.

On the day of the election, Trump hosted a swearing-in ceremony for Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin at the White House. He also participated in several policy meetings at the White House, according to his public schedule.

In-person early voting was available in Florida's House District 87 special election from March 14 through March 22 at two locations in Palm Beach County, including on weekends, according to a staffer at the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections office. "As everyone knows, the President is a resident of Palm Beach and participates in Florida elections, but he obviously primarily lives at the White House in Washington, D.C.," said Olivia Wales, White House spokeswoman.

Trump has frequently claimed that mail-in ballots cause widespread election fraud. "Mail-in voting means mail-in cheating. I call it mail-in cheating," Trump said. He added, "I think mail-in voting is a terrible thing. I think if you vote, you should go."

"Because I'm allowed to," Trump said when asked about his use of mail-in voting. "There's a big difference between somebody who is out of state and does a ballot and everything is sealed and certified and everything else."

The president is pushing Congress to pass a massive election overhaul bill called the SAVE America Act. He has suggested in public comments that the bill would end mail-in voting, though the legislation would not end mail-in voting.

"As President Trump has said, the SAVE America Act has commonsense exceptions for Americans to use mail-in ballots for illness, disability, military, or travel — but universal mail-in voting should not be allowed because it's highly susceptible to fraud," said Wales.

Democrat Emily Gregory defeated Republican candidate Jon Maples in the special election for Florida's House District 87, flipping the seat from Republican to Democratic. Maples had been endorsed by Trump.
