HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA — Zoox, an autonomous vehicle company owned by Amazon, unveiled a refreshed version of its purpose-built robotaxi. The company described the refreshed vehicle as the "next evolution" of the robotaxi intended for mass production.

The updated robotaxi features interior changes, including monochrome aloe green seating and stone-grey flooring and trim. The seats and headrests have increased padding and ergonomic curves, with the wireless charging pad now including fluting for stability. Additionally, the cupholders are larger than previous versions, and the interior touchscreen has been updated for improved vividness. Zoox stated that these design changes were based on rider feedback.

The refreshed robotaxi also includes enhancements for communication. The interface of the sliding doors incorporates a new speaker and microphone, providing additional two-way audio capabilities. Bidirectional reflectors on the robotaxi can rotate colors to indicate the direction of travel. Zoox stated these improvements aim to ensure clearer communication to riders, other road users, Zoox Support, and first responders.

The refreshed robotaxi will enter production at Zoox's facility in Hayward, California. The company expects to introduce this model to its existing fleet later in 2026. The Zoox robotaxi lacks traditional driving controls such as steering wheels or pedals and has a symmetrical shape allowing it to drive in either direction without making a 180-degree turn. The cabin includes two bench seats facing each other and can transport four people.

Zoox is currently operating a free robotaxi service in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Austin, and Miami. The company is waiting for federal approval for an exemption from safety rules that require traditional controls like steering wheels and pedals. Zoox has requested a commercial exemption from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to operate up to 2,500 self-driving cars on public roads for commercial purposes.
