U.S. — The National Weather Service has developed a computer model capable of predicting conditions conducive to rip current formation up to six days in advance. This forecasting ability applies to the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and Guam.
Rip currents account for the most beach rescues every year, with more than 80% involving these phenomena. An estimated 100 people drown annually from rip currents along U.S. beaches, according to the United States Lifesaving Association. The National Weather Service reported that at least 21 individuals have died from rip currents in U.S. waters this year.
Rip currents are defined as narrow columns of water that flow rapidly away from the beach. These currents do not pull swimmers underwater but can carry them a distance from the shore. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that rip currents can flow at speeds up to 8 feet per second. They often form in low spots along the beach or near jetties or piers. While they can be associated with stormy weather, they also occur on sunny days and can be difficult to detect because the surface water often appears calm.
Beach rescue teams and weather forecasters frequently advise swimmers caught in a rip current to "flip, float and follow." It is nearly impossible to fight a rip current directly. Flipping over to float helps conserve energy, keeps airways open, and facilitates calmness while a swimmer is caught in a rip current. Once the current dissipates, it may leave the swimmer in deeper water. Lifeguards recommend raising an arm to signal for help after exiting a rip current.
Beach warning flags provide visual cues regarding water conditions: red flags indicate a high hazard, yellow flags denote a moderate threat, and green flags signify low danger. Double red flags mean a beach is closed. Purple flags warn of dangerous sea life, such as jellyfish. Officials advise against attempting to rescue someone caught in a rip current due to the danger involved, recommending instead to find a lifeguard or call 911. The National Weather Service posts rip current risks on its websites for coastal areas.
