Four activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla—Achraf Khoja, Matias Rodriguez, Domenico Centrone, and Leonarda Alberizia—have been released from detention in Libya and arrived in Tunis on June 25, 2026, a spokesperson said. These individuals were part of a group of 10 humanitarian activists arrested on May 24, 2026, by an armed group affiliated with Khalifa Haftar's Libyan Arab Armed Forces.

Achraf Khoja is from Tunisia. Matias Rodriguez is from Uruguay and also holds Italian citizenship. Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia are from Italy. Centrone, Alberizia, and Rodriguez were handed over to Italy's consul in Benghazi and are scheduled to return to Italy on June 25, 2026. Six other activists are expected to be released within 24 hours of June 25, 2026, a spokesperson said.

Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani commented on the release. "I welcome the news of the released Italians," Tajani said.

The activists held in Libya were part of a separate group that attempted to reach Gaza by land. They were arrested while en route to Sirte to negotiate the convoy's passage with local authorities, seeking approval to continue their journey through Libya and Egypt to reach Gaza. The Libyan Arab Armed Forces are allied with the de facto authorities in eastern and southern Libya. The 10 arrested activists were from eight different countries.

The activists experienced enforced disappearance for periods ranging from two to nine days after their arrest. Prosecutors interrogated them before ordering their pretrial detention, and the activists were charged with 'assembly without authorization.' They staged a hunger strike to protest their detention, a spokesperson said.
