NEW YORK — Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis are adapting their 2024 concept album "Warriors" into a Broadway musical, with previews scheduled to begin in March 2027. The musical is set to open in April 2027 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

Jenny Koons will direct the production, and Andy Blankenbuehler will co-direct and choreograph. Miranda and Davis wrote the book, music, and lyrics. The production is based on Sol Yurick's 1965 novel "The Warriors," which follows a street gang traveling from the Bronx to Coney Island in Brooklyn while being pursued by rival gangs and police. In the musical adaptation, the members of the Warriors gang are all women.

"With 'Warriors,' we take a fateful journey through New York City full of heart and grit as our characters fight to survive," Miranda and Davis said. The musical will be presented in one act, with most of it sung and only a few scenes containing non-musical dialogue. Miranda will not act in the production.

"Musicalizing such a vibrant world for the concept album has been a thrill, and now we're coming out to play on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne. We can't wait," Miranda and Davis said in a statement. The concept album for "Warriors" was released in 2024 and included musical styles such as salsa, ska, agro-rock, boy band, pop, old-school rap, and K-pop, with tracks featuring Spanish and Korean lyrics mixed with English. Miranda secured the rights to a stage adaptation of the novel several years ago.

Miranda said one of his reasons for dramatizing the story was that the original film has "every New Yorker's primal fears onscreen — fear of being pursued by the police, fear of getting caught in the wrong neighborhood at night, fear of falling in the train tracks, fear of scary gangs with face paint." He added, "And then when Eisa saw the movie, she said, 'I'm really interested in the notion of peace.' And what I'm proud of, on the other side of two years of writing together, is the baby looks like both of us: It explores those fears and also explores the notion of what does true peace look like."

Davis said, "There's one line that's on the album that's also in the musical, which is 'What do you do when they kill everything you believe in?' And I think that that question is a question that all of us are wrestling with in the world right now, and I think that that's something that these characters are really bringing to light for us, in the process of trying to get home alive." Thomas Kail, Jeffrey Seller, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Luis A. Miranda, Jr. will produce the musical. The design team includes David Korins for scenic design, Dede Ayite for costume design, Natasha Katz for lighting design, Jason Crystal for sound design, and Hana S. Kim for projection design. Kurt Crowley provides music supervision and orchestrations alongside Scott Wasserman and Mike Elizondo. The musical will have a cast of approximately 20, and no casting announcements have been made.
