CORPUS CHRISTI — Recent rainfall has delayed Corpus Christi's projected Level 1 water emergency from December 2026 to September 2027. The city was previously projected to face a Level 1 water emergency in December 2026.

A Level 1 water emergency is defined as a situation where water demand is projected to exceed supply within six months. Such a declaration would require all customers of the city's regional water system to reduce water use by 25%. Residents' monthly baseline water use is set at 8,000 gallons per household, which would be limited to 6,000 gallons per month under a Level 1 emergency. A proposal before the council states that every 1,000 gallons used beyond the emergency limit would cost an additional $4, and every 1,000 gallons used beyond 8,000 gallons would cost an additional $8. Commercial customers' baselines would be decided case-by-case based largely on average monthly usage from 2021-23.

Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon are the city's two main reservoirs. Lake Corpus Christi's capacity increased from 9% in April to 30% in June 2026. The capacity of Choke Canyon, the city's largest reservoir, has remained around 8% for the past few months. Currently, Choke Canyon and Lake Corpus Christi hold approximately the same amount of water. Lake Texana capacity increased from nearly 50% in April to 100% in June 2026.

Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo said, "This is such good news. While the recent rains have bought us some time, we have to stay focused on our long-term water supply. This is a huge, huge milestone." City Council Member Sylvia Campos added, "God bless these rains."

Nick Winkelmann, chief operating officer of Corpus Christi's water department, stated, "This is not a point in time where we are to let up or to get comfortable. We must continue to execute our plan to diversify the water supply." The city is debating a seawater treatment plant project, estimated to cost nearly one billion dollars, and is expected to make a decision on September 1. Earlier this year, the city drilled dozens of wells in a field in Nueces County and is also working on a project to recycle wastewater.
