CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Chicago Alderwoman Maria Hadden said the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Loyola University student appeared to be a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. "We don't believe there is cause for broader community concern," she said.

Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old from Yorktown, New York, was shot and killed on a Thursday morning while walking with friends along the lakefront near the Loyola University Chicago campus in Chicago. Gorman was a student at Loyola University Chicago.

Jose Medina-Medina, a 25-year-old illegal Venezuelan migrant, was arrested and charged with the killing of Gorman. Police reports indicate that Gorman's killer stalked her from behind for some time before shooting her at point-blank range and fleeing.

Hadden said the shooting appeared to be a case of Gorman being in the wrong place at the wrong time and running into a person who had a gun. She said they might have unintentionally startled this person at the end of the pier.

Hadden is a progressive Democrat serving on the Chicago City Council.
