Pew Research Center published a report on June 23, 2026, based on data from Wave 190 of the American Trends Panel. The survey was conducted from March 23 to March 29, 2026.
SSRS carried out the survey for Pew Research Center using online and live telephone interviewing methods. A total of 3,377 respondents participated online, while 130 completed interviews by telephone. The questionnaire was developed by Pew Research Center in consultation with SSRS, and interviews were conducted in English and Spanish.
The survey included 3,507 responding panelists out of 4,046 sampled, resulting in a survey-level response rate of 87%. The cumulative response rate, accounting for nonresponse to recruitment surveys and attrition, was 3%. For panelists who logged on and completed at least one item, the break-off rate was 1%. The margin of sampling error for the full sample was plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.
The survey included an oversample of Muslim, Jewish, and non-Hispanic Asian adults, who were selected with certainty within the stratified random sample. The target population consisted of noninstitutionalized individuals aged 18 and older residing in the United States.
Since 2018, the American Trends Panel has used address-based sampling for recruitment. This involves mailing a study cover letter and a pre-incentive to a stratified, random sample of households selected from the U.S. Postal Service's Computerized Delivery Sequence File, which is estimated to cover between 90% and 98% of the population. Within each sampled household, the adult with the next birthday is designated to participate. Prior to 2018, the panel recruited participants using landline and cellphone random-digit-dial surveys. A national sample of U.S. adults has been recruited approximately once per year since 2014, with Hispanic, Black, and Asian adults specifically oversampled in 2019, 2022, and 2023, respectively.
All respondents were offered a post-paid incentive ranging from $5 to $20, payable as a check or a gift code for Amazon.com, Target.com, or Walmart.com. Postcard notifications were sent to a subset of panelists on March 23. A soft launch commenced that day with invitations sent to 60 panelists. The full launch occurred on March 24, with invitations sent to all remaining English- and Spanish-speaking sampled online panelists.
The report detailed the methodology for ideology questions. In the U.S., ideology is defined as conservative (right), moderate (center), and liberal (left). In Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the U.K., questions used a scale from "Extreme left" to "Extreme right." Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand used a scale ranging from "Extremely progressive" to "Extremely conservative." Ideology questions were not included in Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, or the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Countries are categorized as high- or middle-income based on World Bank classifications relying on per capita gross national income. The survey results were based on interviews conducted under the direction of Gallup, Langer Research Associates, and Social Research Centre.
