CHESTER, NEW YORK — A Chester, New York highway superintendent was convicted of assault and firearms charges on March 26, 2026, for shooting a DoorDash delivery driver who had gotten lost on his property, according to authorities. John Reilly III faces up to 25 years in prison on the top charge, with sentencing scheduled for May 2026.

The shooting occurred on May 2, 2025, when the delivery driver arrived at Reilly's home in Chester, a town nearly 60 miles north of Manhattan. According to footage from the Ring doorbell camera, the delivery driver walked up to Reilly's front door with a plastic bag and rang the doorbell. According to footage from the Ring doorbell camera, Reilly exited his house with a handgun, fired a shot into his lawn, and said "Go." He shot at the driver's car as it made a three-point turn in the driveway and again as it drove away, according to footage from the Ring doorbell camera.

One of the shots hit the driver, Alpha Barry, in the back, according to authorities. Barry underwent emergency surgery and had over 2 feet (0.6 meters) of his small bowels removed, according to prosecutors. Alpha Barry is a recent immigrant from Guinea.

Barry testified that he did not ask to enter Reilly's home, only to have his phone charged, according to court testimony. A defense lawyer said Reilly told the driver he had not ordered any food, but the driver insisted on coming into the house to charge his phone, which led Reilly to fear a home invasion. On the night of the shooting, Reilly's daughter woke him up after the driver rang the doorbell, a defense lawyer said.

Authorities found multiple guns at Reilly's home that he was not licensed to own, according to prosecutors. A defense lawyer said Reilly claimed he acted in self-defense to protect his family and home when he shot at the driver.

Jurors in the case began deliberations on Tuesday. Reilly was acquitted of one assault charge and convicted of a different assault charge that focused on whether he acted recklessly. He had been charged with attempted murder, but the jury did not consider that charge after finding him guilty on the assault charge.

In 2023, a 66-year-old man in rural upstate New York fatally shot a 20-year-old woman when the vehicle she was riding in mistakenly turned into his driveway. The man said he believed his home was under siege and fired a warning shot. After deliberating for less than an hour, a jury convicted him of second-degree murder.
