Valve will begin shipping its Steam Machine on June 29, 2026. Initial availability of the device will be limited due to parts shortages. Reservations for the Steam Machine will close on June 25 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Valve will use a randomized reservation system for the initial sale. Individuals with a valid Steam account who made a purchase before April 27, 2026, are eligible to place a reservation. Valve is limiting reservations to one per household. The company launched SteamOS 3.8 with support for the Steam Machine.

The base model of the Steam Machine, which includes 512GB of storage, is priced at $1,049. A model with 2TB of storage is available for $1,349 and includes two exclusive faceplates with red fabric and walnut finishes. Customers can bundle a Steam Controller with either Steam Machine model for an additional $79. The Steam Machine ships with the Linux-based SteamOS.

Both versions of the Steam Machine are built with a custom six-core AMD Zen 4 CPU, peaking at 4.8GHz, and an integrated AMD RDNA3 GPU. The GPU features 28 compute units and 8GB of dedicated DDR6 VRAM soldered to the board, alongside 16GB of DDR5 memory. Valve stated that it began sourcing parts for the Steam Machine in 2023. Worldwide shortages of memory and storage have impacted the number of Steam Machines available at launch.

Valve stated that the original pricing vision for the Steam Machine is no longer viable in 2026 due to component costs. The company stated it is selling the Steam Machine at cost rather than subsidizing the price. Valve employee Lawrence Yang said, "The cost of the product is basically the cost of the components and what it takes to make it."

Pierre-Loup Griffais, another Valve employee, stated, "I would say that we're being more aggressive with margins and things to be as close to cost as possible now." He also said that Valve is launching approximately two-thirds of the planned quantity for the Steam Machine. Griffais added that Valve is collaborating with Nvidia on SteamOS support for Nvidia hardware. Current Steam Controller reservations indicate a 2027 shipping date. Valve stated it has no plans to stop making the Steam Controller, noting that initial demand for it exceeded expectations.
