LOS ANGELES — The Academy Awards will move from the Dolby Theatre to the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles starting with the 101st ceremony in 2029. The relocation coincides with the ceremony's shift from airing on ABC to streaming live and for free on YouTube starting in 2029.

The move marks a new partnership between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and AEG that runs through 2039. AEG owns and operates the L.A. Live complex, including the venue currently known as the Peacock Theater, where the ceremony will be held.

The Dolby Theatre has hosted the Oscars ceremony since 2002, while ABC has held broadcast rights to the awards show since 1976. The Academy Awards ceremony will continue to be held at the Dolby Theatre and televised live on ABC in 2028 for the centennial ceremony before the transition takes place.

The new venue is located roughly 9 miles away from the Dolby Theatre and has a greater seating capacity. L.A. Live's plaza will host red carpet arrivals and activities for the ceremony.

The Peacock Theater has previously hosted the Emmy Awards and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. The venue is adjacent to the Crypto.com Arena, home of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Kings. In 2021, the Oscars ceremony was held at Union Station instead of the Dolby Theatre as a concession to COVID-19, marking the only time since 2002 that the ceremony was not held at the Dolby Theatre.
