NEW YORK CITY — Groups linked to OpenAI and Anthropic have collectively spent more than $15 million on pro- and anti-Alex Bores messaging in New York's 12th Congressional District, according to Federal Election Commission filings. Alex Bores, a 35-year-old New York state assemblyman, entered the Democratic primary race in October 2025 to replace retiring Representative Jerry Nadler.

Alex Bores co-sponsored New York's Responsible AI Safety and Education Act, which requires artificial intelligence companies to report safety incidents and publish information on their safeguards. The 12th Congressional District spans from 14th Street in Manhattan to the top of Central Park.

Leading the Future, a super PAC mainly funded by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman, has raised more than $75 million. The group has spent $23.5 million on dozens of races in Texas, Georgia, Illinois, and Montana through super PACs including Think Big and American Mission, according to OpenSecrets' tally of federal filings.

Chris Larsen launched a super PAC called You Can Push Back, which has spent nearly $2 million supporting Alex Bores in New York. Additionally, Google and Meta are backing a super PAC focused on California state legislative races.

Michael Beckel, director of money in politics reform at Issue One, stated, "This type of spending really helps shape who is at the table and what perspectives they are bringing into those conversations when new legislation is crafted." The family of the woman ex-NFL player Darron Lee is accused of murdering is calling for OpenAI to face accountability after ChatGPT was allegedly used in the crime.
