WASHINGTON, D.C. — Super PACs associated with investors in OpenAI and Anthropic have spent more than $15 million on messaging supporting and opposing Alex Bores in the Democratic primary for New York's 12th Congressional District, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

Super PACs tied to OpenAI investors have spent funds opposing Bores' campaign. Anthropic is backing super PACs that support Bores. Bores, a New York state assemblyman, co-sponsored the state's Responsible AI Safety and Education Act. The legislation requires artificial intelligence companies to report safety incidents and publish information on their safeguards.

Bores entered the Democratic primary race in October 2025. Representative Jerry Nadler is retiring from the district. Congress has not enacted federal legislation governing artificial intelligence.

AI-focused super PACs have spent $43.3 million on congressional races in the current election cycle, according to OpenSecrets. Leading the Future, a super PAC primarily funded by Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman, has raised more than $75 million. Andreessen Horowitz is an investor in OpenAI. This PAC has spent $23.5 million on races in Texas, Georgia, Illinois, and Montana, and has funded a PAC supporting Byron Donalds' campaign for governor of Florida.

Anthropic contributed $20 million to Public First Action, a nonprofit affiliated with Public First, in February 2026. Public First-affiliated PACs have spent $16.6 million on congressional races in North Carolina, Texas, and Utah, OpenSecrets reported. Michael Beckel, director of money in politics reform at Issue One, said, "This type of spending really helps shape who is at the table and what perspectives they are bringing into those conversations when new legislation is crafted." He added, "It's rewriting the playbook for how industries are trying to exert their influence in Washington and in states across the country."
