FRISCO — Karmelo Anthony was convicted of murder on June 10 in the death of Austin Metcalf and sentenced to 35 years in prison. A jury rejected Anthony's claims of self-defense.

The conviction arose from the April 2, 2025, stabbing of Metcalf at a track meet in Frisco, Texas. Anthony stabbed Metcalf in the chest with a 3.5-inch blade at Kuykendall Stadium. Metcalf was 17 years old at the time of his death and was a student at Memorial High School. Anthony, 19 at the time of his conviction, was a student at Frisco Centennial High School.

Witnesses stated that Metcalf and other Memorial High School students had asked Anthony to leave their tent before the stabbing. A 15-year-old witness testified that Anthony responded to their request by saying, "F–k y'all. I'm not going to leave. Y'all are a bunch of p–sies. Y'all not going to do anything." Anthony later stated, "He put his hands on me. I told him not to. He put his hands on me."

Following the conclusion of the trial, the Collin County court released videos as part of the evidence. Surveillance footage from April 2, 2025, which had no sound, showed a figure in a gray sweatshirt emerging from behind a yellow tent. This figure ran down bleacher steps, tripped, fell, and then ran along the fencing separating the bleachers from the track. Anthony was later joined by an unidentified person partway around the track; they stopped to talk and hugged.

Anthony was later seen walking toward a fence and meeting a police officer, who then placed him in handcuffs. Anthony obeyed the officer's commands and was escorted to a police cruiser. After the stabbing, a track coach performed CPR on Metcalf. A student told 911 dispatchers, "My friend's bleeding everywhere." A track coach was also heard in the background of a 911 call encouraging Metcalf, saying, "FIght through! Fight through! You're doing good."
