GALVESTON — A sidewalk along the 2800 block of 61st Street in Galveston was repaired days after a news report noted resident concerns about its condition. Residents had previously requested assistance, stating the sidewalk had been in poor condition for years.
Damaged sections forced some pedestrians, including seniors and people using wheelchairs or scooters, into the roadway. The street runs alongside a roadway with a posted speed limit of 40 mph and is a route for accessing the Galveston Seawall. Galveston resident Shari Latif said, "It's been like this for years. There are a lot of seniors that pass by." Resident Donna Reading said she avoided the area due to its condition. "If I'm in the wheelchair, I don't go down this way because if I did, I'd have to go out in the street, and that is not very safe," Reading said.
After the repair, Latif confirmed the work had been completed, saying, "They did it." Resident Rochelle Snowden said, "I wasn't expecting results this quick." Reading described the repaired section, saying, "It's all fresh. It looks beautiful."
A follow-up inspection identified additional sidewalk hazards in the nearby area, including multiple cracked and uneven sections. One area featured concrete that had shifted significantly from its foundation, and another location had exposed rebar protruding from the sidewalk near a City of Galveston manhole. Public Works employees arrived within an hour to assess the problem areas after being contacted. City workers acknowledged one of the identified trouble spots and indicated they would elevate the concerns to supervisors. Snowden said, "If the whole thing gets done, it will make my year."
