GINEBRA — President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Iran and authorized the immediate lifting of a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. U.S. Armed Forces lifted the blockade on all commercial maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports and coastal areas on Thursday.
The naval blockade was ordered by Trump in mid-April 2026. U.S. Central Command reported diverting 142 commercial vessels and disabling nine non-compliant vessels since the blockade began on April 13, 2026. Iran maintained a de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz before the agreement. Approximately 20 percent of the world's oil supply transits through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday during a dinner at the Palace of Versailles in France. He stated that the agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran was complete. "El acuerdo con la República Islámica de Irán ya está completo. ¡Felicitaciones a todos!" Trump posted. "Barcos del mundo, enciendan sus motores. ¡Que fluya el petróleo!"
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, stated that a memorandum of understanding with the United States was finalized and will be formally signed on June 19, 2026, in Switzerland. "Nuestros compromisos entrarán en vigor a partir del viernes." Gharibabadi stated. He added, "Dos cuestiones entrarán en vigor de inmediato a partir de temprano esta mañana. Un fin permanente e inmediato de la guerra en todos los frentes, incluido Líbano. El levantamiento y la terminación del bloqueo naval que Estados Unidos había impuesto contra la República Islámica de Irán." He stated that the memorandum resulted from diplomatic efforts and what he described as Iranian military achievements.
Shehbaz Sharif announced that a formal signing ceremony for the agreement is scheduled for Friday in Geneva, Switzerland. U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance stated he plans to attend the official signing ceremony. "Creo que todavía estamos definiendo la logística sobre quién va a asistir a esa ceremonia de firma. Sin duda planeo estar allí, pero es posible que el propio presidente pueda estar allí," Vance said. The U.S. Secret Service generally advises against simultaneous international travel for the president and vice president for security and succession reasons. Trump plans to attend the annual G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France.
The memorandum of understanding provides a 60-day timeframe for the United States and Iran to finalize a comprehensive peace deal addressing nuclear issues, sanctions relief, and frozen Iranian funds. U.S. Central Command stated that large naval vessels will remain in the region to ensure compliance with the agreement.
