Kaleidescape released the Strato E media player priced at $2,995. The device offers high-bitrate 4K movie playback and lossless audio capabilities.
The Strato E features a 480GB solid-state drive, a USB port, and a single HDMI 2.1 port for combined audio and video output. This internal storage capacity can hold approximately five to six 4K movies. The device connects to home networks via Ethernet to download movie files directly from studios, allowing for disc-less playback.
Kaleidescape determines the required bitrate per frame during its encoding process to maintain visually lossless playback quality. For instance, the file for the movie Top Gun: Maverick has an average bitrate of 71Mbps, with a maximum bitrate of 166Mbps, resulting in a file size of 84.6GB. Other examples include the file for Incredibles 2, which has an average bitrate of 66.9Mbps and a maximum of 160Mbps, totaling 69.3GB. Mad Max: Fury Road's file averages 68Mbps with a maximum of 152Mbps and a size of 69.6GB. Godzilla vs. Kong has an average bitrate of 67.4Mbps, a maximum of 143Mbps, and a file size of 64.5GB. Pacific Rim's file shows an average bitrate of 70.7Mbps, a maximum of 137Mbps, and a file size of 78.1GB, while Ghostbusters averages 65Mbps with a maximum of 123Mbps and a size of 58.4GB.
The player's audio playback utilizes lossless formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Most streaming services deliver audio using lossy Dolby Digital Plus compression. John Higgins, a technology reviewer, stated that the player displayed more shadow detail and fewer compression artifacts in the film Dune compared to its HBO Max streaming version.
He also reported minimal visual differences when comparing its files of Mad Max: Fury Road and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to 4K Blu-ray discs played on a Magnetar UDP900 MKII player. However, Nilay Patel, a publication editor-in-chief, stated that the film Ghostbusters appeared noisier on the player when compared to the Sony Pictures Core streaming version. The service delivers content at a maximum bitrate of 80Mbps and is restricted to Sony-branded hardware.
