GLOUCESTERSHIRE — Cameron Thomas, a Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament, was arrested by Gloucestershire police on Wednesday night. Thomas had his party whip and party membership suspended pending the outcome of a police investigation.
Law enforcement officials have not released any specific details regarding the reason for Thomas's arrest. A Liberal Democrat spokesperson stated, "Cameron Thomas MP has had the party whip suspended pending the outcome of a police investigation. We are unable to comment further while the police investigation is ongoing."
Thomas was elected as the Member of Parliament for Tewkesbury in 2024, winning the seat from the Conservative Party with a voting majority exceeding 6,000 votes.
On Wednesday, shortly after 6 p.m., a post appeared on Thomas's Facebook page showing him in the House of Commons wearing an England football shirt that displayed the slogan "Extra Time For Dads" advocating for extended paternity leave. A subsequent message posted to his Facebook page criticized Reform UK.
Before his political career, Thomas served in the Royal Air Force for 23 years, working in telecommunications and information technology. A tour of duty as a drill instructor led him to commission as a military police officer. He served in various locations, including Iraq, the Falkland Islands, and the U.S.
Thomas has advocated for closer collaboration between the U.K. and NATO and E.U. partners and supported rebuilding the U.K. defense-industrial base. He resides in the Tewkesbury constituency, where his daughter attends school, and attended a fair in Bishop's Cleve, near Cheltenham, over the past weekend.
