NEW YORK CITY — The US Department of Transportation, Amtrak, and Penn Transformation Partners announced a renovation plan for Penn Station in New York City on 8 June. The project has an $8 billion budget and includes the construction of a grand entrance on Eighth Avenue, expanded concourses, and leaves Madison Square Garden in its current location.

The plan involves demolishing a theater to create an art deco facade and an entrance. Other design elements include replacing existing walkways with wider concourses, removing platform columns, and adding elevators, escalators, and stairs. Planners stated that construction on the renovation is scheduled to begin by the end of 2027.

The US Department of Transportation indicated that funding for the project will primarily come from federal grants to Amtrak, federal loans, private financing, and equity raised by Penn Transportation Partners. Renderings of the renovation show an emblem with Donald Trump's name on a wall near a station entrance.

Manhattan borough president Brad Hoylman-Sigal expressed opposition to the plan, citing a lack of competitive bidding and the exclusion of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from discussions. Hoylman-Sigal said, "We also know that ultimately Donald Trump is calling the shots. We question as a community not only the design choices, because we have seen what he has done in Washington, whether it be the triumphal arch or a ballroom, but also, fundamentally, we are going to get stuck with the bill." He added, "It would be a daily reminder for New Yorkers of a lot of bad things that have happened to our nation under his watch."

Practice for Architecture and Urbanism stated the project will increase the train hall capacity by 165 percent. Founder Vishaan Chakrabarti said, "Our design not only creates more capacity and improves operations. It also will create a gateway to New York that is befitting our great city and will bring a sense of dignity to the experience of train travel to and from New York." Sean Duffy, US Secretary of Transportation, said, "The golden age of transportation is coming thanks to President Trump."

Penn Station, originally opened in 1910, was demolished in 1963 to make way for Madison Square Garden. More than 600,000 passengers currently travel through Penn Station daily.
