WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Trump administration imposed export controls on Anthropic's Claude Mythos AI model after the company granted SK Telecom access to it. On Friday, the administration ordered Anthropic to revoke access to Mythos and its Fable 5 model for all foreign nationals.

U.S. officials alleged that the company maintains ties to China. The White House determined that Anthropic could not safeguard its most advanced AI technology. Following the order, Anthropic disabled public access to both the Claude Mythos and Fable 5 models entirely. Fable 5 is a version of the Claude Mythos model that was released to the public on June 9.

Anthropic initially restricted early access to Claude Mythos through a program called Project Glasswing. The company was among approximately 150 organizations that received access to the Claude Mythos model. The White House had requested that Anthropic revoke its access to Claude Mythos earlier in the current month. Anthropic immediately revoked the company's access to the model after that request.

The company invested $100 million in Anthropic in 2023. This investment coincided with a commercial partnership established to develop an AI model specifically for the telecommunications industry. A corporate spokesperson for the company said, "The anonymous insider's remarks in foreign media lack verified facts, and our company has no ties to China." It generated approximately $1.9 million in revenue from China in 2024 and employed seven people in China during the same year.

The company sold its stake in China Unicom in 2009 for approximately $1.3 billion. It listed an investment in UNISK valued at roughly $17 million in its 2025 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. A U.S. government letter to Anthropic, which demanded access restrictions to Claude Mythos and Fable 5, only referenced U.S. nationals and did not mention SK Telecom or China. Amazon researchers identified potential methods to bypass Fable 5's security restrictions to access the underlying model's capabilities.
