U.S. President Donald Trump met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France on Wednesday. The Egyptian presidency confirmed the meeting between the two leaders.
Television footage showed Trump and al-Sisi prior to their bilateral discussions. During the meeting, Trump stated that he has maintained ties with al-Sisi over the past decade.
An Egyptian presidency statement indicated that al-Sisi welcomed the recently reached U.S.-Iran agreement and congratulated Trump on the deal. Al-Sisi expressed hope that the U.S.-Iran agreement would contribute to ending war and escalation in the Middle East. Trump answered press questions regarding an Iran deal during the meeting with al-Sisi.
Al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to coordinating with the United States to advance the implementation of Trump's peace plan for Gaza. He stated that resolving the Palestinian conflict is essential to achieving lasting peace and stability in the Middle East. Egypt has participated in Palestinian reconciliation talks and policy discussions regarding Gaza over the years.
Egypt also seeks U.S. support regarding its dispute with Ethiopia concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. During Trump's second term, the U.S. administration has focused policy attention on Israel and Iran.
Trump said during the meeting, "Our relationship has been very strong for a long time. We'll discuss many things, including trade. We do a lot of business with Egypt." In spring 2017, Trump also met with al-Sisi and the King of Saudi Arabia during a summit with Arab and Muslim leaders in Saudi Arabia.
