Meta announced the rollout of new artificial intelligence (AI) features for Facebook, including an AI Mode search option and AI-powered photo presets. The Muse Spark AI model powers the new search feature.
The AI Mode search option appears alongside existing filters such as People and Marketplace. This mode generates answers using information from public posts across Meta platforms, including Facebook Groups and Instagram Reels. Users can ask Meta's AI follow-up questions in response to generated search results. Meta stated, "The feature uses Meta AI to give you answers grounded in what people are saying publicly across our apps."
The AI-powered photo presets allow users to virtually apply different clothing, hairstyles, and accessories. These presets include a wardrobe tool for sports jerseys in Stories and a profile picture restyling option, along with editing tools for collage cutouts and video transition effects. Meta stated, "The Muse Spark AI model will over time unlock new features that cite recommendations and content people share across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads."
Initial testing of the AI search produced some inconsistencies, including location recommendations that did not match the queried geographic area. The AI cited a post regarding community pool hours that could not be located on the platform. Testing also showed the feature generated a map of Puget Sound that displayed the city of Snohomish in two separate locations. However, testing indicated the AI did not generate false information regarding vaccines, the September 11 attacks, or election integrity. When queried about the January 6th Capitol events, the AI produced a response justifying the participants' actions before stating it could not assist with follow-up questions.
Earlier this year, Meta introduced other AI features, including animated Facebook profile pictures in February. In March, an AI feature was added to Facebook Marketplace designed to automatically reply to buyer messages. Facebook also launched an AI assistant for creators to provide posting time suggestions and comment summaries. Additionally, Forum, a new application launched by Meta, includes an AI tab for answering questions based on Facebook Group discussions.
