VANCOUVER, WASH. — A Vancouver police officer shot and wounded a man holding a knife during a residential burglary call on May 26. The incident occurred at approximately 6:35 a.m. in the 10900 block of Northeast 48th Street.

Three Vancouver police officers responded to the residence after a woman called 911, reporting breaking glass at her home. The caller stated she believed the individual was a former boyfriend who had attempted to enter the property days earlier.

Officer Alexander Zaferis, 29, fired four shots. Police observed a man holding a knife walking toward a neighbor in a driveway. The man did not drop the weapon and continued moving toward the neighbor. Zaferis ordered him to drop the knife, held in his left hand. The man ran toward another arriving officer. One gunshot was fired as the man moved away, followed by three additional shots. The man sustained a single gunshot wound to his lower back and fell to the ground.

Officers provided medical aid and placed the man in handcuffs, and he was then transported to a local hospital. Two objects marked as knives were located on the ground near the man. Authorities have not publicly identified the man or released an update on his medical condition.

Officer Zaferis' body camera footage lasted 17 seconds. The second officer's footage lasted approximately two minutes and 45 seconds, and the third officer's footage lasted about one minute and 44 seconds. Vancouver Police Department Spokesperson Kim Kapp stated that the release of the video provides visual context of the incident.

No independent assessment of Alexander Zaferis’s claims was available.
